A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that is performed to remove uterine fibroids most times without harming the uterus. This allows the patient to preserve her ability to have children in the future.
Myomectomies can be performed in several different ways depending on the size, location, and amount of uterine fibroids in the patient. A myomectomy performed using a laparotomy procedure will allow Dr. Ayalon to remove the fibroids through an abdominal incision. Laparoscopy myomectomies are performed with a tiny camera and specialized instruments through thin incisions. This technique allows for faster recovery times, reduced bleeding, and a decreased risk of infection.
In the event that the fibroids spread to the uterine cavity, Dr. Ayalon will need to destroy them with hysteroscopic surgery. Hysteroscopic procedures involve a viewing device and small surgical tools inserted in the vagina and cervix and into the uterus. Using a laser or electrical current, Dr. Ayalon will locate and destroy the fibroids.
Fibroids that are too deep in the uterine wall may be impossible to remove without damage to the uterus, but Dr. Ayalon can instead help you treat these fibroids to help you deal with the symptoms.
